Fuel saving tires...really?

posted on

That’s right!  Make the right choice on which tires to purchase and you could save hundreds on gas.  Both Goodyear’s Assurance Fuel Max as well as Michelin’s Energy Saver product have what manufacturers call lower “rolling resistance.”  In short, rolling resistance is the amount of force it takes to push a tire down a road.  So the lower the rolling resistance, the less fuel you use.  According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, rolling resistance accounts for four percent of a vehicles fuel use in city driving and seven percent on the highway.  According to the Goodyear, their Assurance Fuel Max could potentially save you $364 per set of four tires if your vehicle gets an average of 24 MPG and gas was $3.50 per gallon.  To more specifically see how much you could save, see Goodyear’s Savings Calculator at http://www.goodyeartires.com/tire/assurance-fuel-max/.  Goodyear touts their Assurance Fuel Max’s fuel-saving tread compound “helps save up to 2.600 miles worth of gas over the life of 4 tires” and Michelin’s Energy Saver A/S tire claims savings up to 109 gallons of gas.  Wow!  That’s a savings worth exploring.

Fuel savings is not all you get from these innovative tires.  Both lines provide all-around performance delivering good stopping and handling capabilities. The days are over when you had to choose between fuel efficiency and overall performance.  The Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max offers both a Wet tread zone which helps evacuate water away from the treadface for better traction on wet roads, as well as a dry tread zone with Solid Shoulder Blocks helping to enhance handing and grip for confident maneuvering on dry roads. Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max offers a 65,000 mile warranty.  Michelin’s Energy Saver A/S construction combines a special type of rubber that keeps the tires cooler – helping improve both fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions. In addition, Michelin claims this line offers an eight foot shorter stopping distance than leading competitors.  Save, perform, last longer and go green with your tires!
